In 1969 the Vietnam War was pretty much at its peak. I was 24 years old, had completed BA and MS degrees and I had exhausted any appeals for possible deferments after my student deferment was expired. Back then, when you became 1A or draft eligible, you were called, “draft bait.” I became draft bait in 1969 and chose to enlist in the Air Force rather then take my chances with the Draft Board. The United States Air Force has traditionally sent all their new enlisted recruits to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX for basic training. So, on August 19, 1969, I reported for duty to Lackland. I completed my basic training in early October and went into the city of San Antonio and saw the Alamo for the first time. I was back in San Antonio around 1990. And, nearly 34 years to the month, in September 2003, I was back in San Antonio visiting the Alamo with my long time friend from New Zealand, Brian Morris. Yes! I remember the Alamo.
Enthusiastically,
Ed
