In April of 2010 I was in Sedona and the beautiful Red Rock region of Arizona. Not far outside of Sedona is the Chapel of the Holy Cross. I took a lot of pictures of the Chapel from a number of different vantage points including directly below it and from the inside. This photo is from several miles away. I like it because it presents a real perspective of the Chapel and how it fits into its majestic surroundings. There is a certain awesomeness when comparing mankind’s work with the work of Nature. The Chapel is situated in the center of the photo and just above the green foliage, nestled in the rocks, in case you’re having difficulty locating it.
The Chapel, while not actually designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was inspired by his architectural work around the U.S. and designed by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, one of Wright’s students. It was completed in 1956. The views from the Chapel are both breathtaking and exquisite. From the Chapel’s perch you can see Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Courthouse Butte and the eastern rim of Sedona. Directly below the Chapel, but not visible from this location, is a massive mansion that was still under construction at the time of this photo. I think labeling the structure a small palace wouldn’t be exaggerating. A photo of that structure will appear in the future in this series of photos of the week.
Enthusiastically,
Ed
