Serendipity! Yes, indeed! I was exploring a small area in
West Virginia known as Antioch. I was looking for an encampment where a friend
who goes by the name of Gypsy Jane was spending the weekend with friends. Well,
I didn't find the encampment or Gypsy Jane, but I did find something I wasn't
expecting.
As I drove up and down the few back country roads around
Antioch seeking the encampment and Gypsy Jane, I discovered a place called the
Nancy Hanks Farm. I drove in and found the cabin in the photo above along with
a marker that identified this as the location where Nancy Hanks was born. Okay,
so who was Nancy Hanks? If you're a history buff, you may already know who she
is.
For those not in the know, Nancy Hanks is Abraham Lincoln's
mother. Yes! That Abraham Lincoln. What? You guessed that from the title of
this article? Well, it's true. And, this is what I totally love and enjoy about
exploring this great country. You never know what you're going to discover
around the next bend or over the next hill. This particular location is a mere
20 minutes from my West Virginia base camp.

I grew up in Illinois, the Land of LIncoln. Of course, I know who Nancy Hanks was. :)
I guess I should have, but I've probably forgotten a lot of things I thought were probably trivial at the time. So much to learn, such an under utilized brain to cram it all into.
