Photo of the Week #19 – The Quartzite (AZ) General Store

Quartzite, Arizona is a wide spot in the road – Interstate 10, to be more specific – west of Phoenix and near the California border. Blythe, CA, just across the border, is approximately 23 miles west of Quartzite. The Quartzite General Store is on “Main Street” which runs parallel to I-10.

Quartzite has a very low population density and is mostly land with the, approximately, 3,500 full-time residents spread out over nearly 34 square miles. Once the home of mining, mainly for various kinds of stones (thus, the name, Quartzite) the town now hosts about two million visitors to various lapidary stone shows during January and February. It also is the winter home of thousands and thousands of full-time and snowbird RVers during the months when it’s coldest in the northern part of the country. The median household income for the full-time residents is around $15K to $16K and 85% of the population is over 45 with more then 55% of the population over 65.
